Post Avulsion/ Post Matrixectomy Instructions

  1. Put your foot up for the rest of the day and take it easy. The more your foot hangs down, the more your toe may bleed. If it does bleed, add more gauze to the wrap and secure it. Please do not take off the original dressing until tomorrow.
  2. Tomorrow morning after you shower, take the dressing off, dry your toe and cover it with a CLOTH band aid. The dressing is easier to remove if it is wet.
  3. Starting the day after the procedure, soak your toe in a basin of warm water with a teaspoon of Epsom salts for approximately 5-10 minutes. Dry your toe and cover with a cloth band aid. You must soak your toe every day until it is healed. This prevents a scab from forming, which could trap bacteria and cause an infection.
  4. Shower with the band aid in place and change it after drying off.
  5. Your toe must be covered with a cloth band aid at all times until healed, especially when in a shoe. This will help prevent a fungus and bacteria from getting to the wound.
  6. Band aids must be cloth or fabric. Plastic keeps the wound too wet.
  7. Signs of infection are an increase in pain. It is normal for your toe to be red after the procedure. This is from your body increasing blood flow to the area to heal the wound.
  8. Avulsions heal in approximately 2-3 weeks and matrixectomies heal in 4-6 weeks, usually.
